It’s tempting to prioritize comfort in your bedroom—but unless your home is set up with multiple zones, it’s usually not the best place for a thermostat. Placement plays a major role in comfort, efficiency, and overall system performance, so it’s worth understanding the trade-offs.
The biggest advantage of a bedroom thermostat is improved sleep comfort, especially if you spend a significant amount of time there. It can also feel convenient to have temperature control nearby at night. However, with most modern thermostats offering app-based control, adjusting settings from your phone has largely eliminated that need.
The main drawback is accuracy. Bedrooms are typically occupied at night and unused during the day, which means the thermostat may be reading temperatures from an unoccupied space for much of the time. This can lead to uneven comfort throughout the home, increased energy use, and unnecessary system cycling.
For best results, thermostats should be installed in a central, commonly used area where they can more accurately reflect overall living conditions. It’s also important to avoid placement near vents, windows, doors, or heat-producing areas like kitchens and bathrooms, as these can skew readings.
