Understanding the Transition to R-454B Refrigerant

Preferred Air explains the transition from R-410A refrigerant to R-454B.
June 20, 2025

If you are considering a new HVAC system or looking to improve your home's energy efficiency, you have likely come across R-454B refrigerant in your research. As of January 1, 2025, a major regulatory change now requires that all newly manufactured HVAC systems that use refrigerant must use R-454B —a move designed to reduce environmental impact and promote energy efficiency across the industry.

What is R-454B, and Why the Change?

R-454B functions like other refrigerants by absorbing heat from the air—indoors or outdoors—and transferring it to regulate indoor temperatures. The key difference? R-454B does this more efficiently, requiring less energy to achieve the same results.

This refrigerant is replacing R-410A, which offered similar performance but had a higher global warming potential.  By switching to R-454B, the HVAC industry aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower utility costs for home and business owners, and contribute to a healthier planet.

Can I Still Use and Service My Existing System?

Yes. The new regulations apply only to newly manufactured systems.  If your current HVAC system uses R-410A, you can still have it serviced and maintained.

However, as the industry shifts away from R-410A, its production will gradually decrease—which may lead to higher refrigerant costs over time. While there’s no need to rush a replacement, it’s a good idea to start planning ahead, especially for aging systems.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

Upgrading to a new R-454B system offers several benefits:

·       Improved energy efficiency

·       Lower monthly utility bills

·       Extended equipment lifespan

·       Smaller environmental footprint

For those already considering an upgrade, R-454B systems are a smart investment—offering both long-term savings and sustainability.

Cost Considerations

As with any industry-wide change, there may be short-term cost increases  due to updated manufacturing and training processes. However, the HVAC market is built to adapt, and pricing is expected to stabilize as production ramps up and demand increases.

Is R-454B Safe?

We have heard some concerns about flammability warnings  on R-454B packaging and equipment. While it is classified as mildly flammable, it meets all required safety standards when installed and handled by trained professionals.

The key to safe use is simple: no open flames and licensed technicians should handle it. Refrigerants with flammability characteristics are not new, and R-454B has been thoroughly tested to ensure it is safe for residential and commercial use.

Can I Retrofit My Current System?

Unfortunately, retrofitting existing R-410A systems to use R-454B is not possible.  The two refrigerants have incompatible pressure and chemical requirements.  If you want to take advantage of R-454B’s benefits, a full system replacement is required.
